Course Description

Critical thinking is a necessary step toward success in almost all settings. This program is designed to help learners define and identify critical thinking and reasoning skills and develop those skills through real-world case studies, interactive exercises, and checklists.


Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  • Define critical thinking, reasoning, and logic
  • Ask appropriate questions for critical thinking
  • Define the logical approach to critical thinking
  • Determine your preferred problem-solving style
  • Understand the process of systematic problem-solving
  • Utilize analysis models (situation assessment; decision analysis; problem evaluation)
  • Identify and overcome barriers to critical thinking
  • Articulate common reasoning fallacies
  • Understand critical thinking as it pertains to the workplace
  • Apply critical thinking skills to different disciplines



Breadth of Assignments
This course utilizes a variety of assignment types in exploring the basic principles of Critical Tincluding reading assignments, both online and textbook based, individual assignments involving online research, essay writing, and analytical review questions, group projects involving discussion boards, collaborative thought, and a course-wide research and writing case study assignment.

• Define critical thinking
• Outline the key underlying concepts in critical thinking
• Describe the relevance of critical thinking to evaluating arguments and problem solving
• Articulate how critical thinking skills can help you in all aspects of your life
• Explain the importance of asking the right questions in critical thinking
• Define barriers to critical thinking
• Describe how reasoning and logic figure in critical thinking


Module 2: Systematic Problem Solving
• Describe the process of systematic problem solving
• Apply the process in analyzing a problem and deriving a solution to it
• Explain the Socratic method and its application to problem solving
• Define Occam's razor
• Identify the 8 elements of reasoning and describe how they are employed
• Identify the 7 standards of critical thinking and describe how they are applied
decisions

Module 3: Barriers to Critical Thinking

• Recording accounting transactions and evaluating the effects of these transactions on the financial statements
• Preparing a balance sheet from the accounting records
• Evaluating a company's operating performance using a balance sheet, an income statement, and ratio analysis

Module 4: Identifying Issues and Conclusions
• Cash inflows and outflows and preparing a cash flow statement
• Internal control weaknesses and good internal control procedures
• Analyzing the operations of a company
• Using financial statements to make business decisions

Module 5: Considering Ambiguity and Assumptions

• Analyzing annual reports
• Formulating alternatives to resolve a given problem, and determine how each alternative will affect a company's costs and break-even point
• Performing cost-volume-profit analysis

Module 6: Weighing the Evidence

• Identifying the budget schedules included in the master budget
• Formulating a plan to keep costs in line with a budget
• Recognizing the structure, reports, and analyses of a corporation, and writing a business plan
